Detail

Step 1|Center the Clay

Place the clay on the pottery wheel and apply steady pressure with both hands to center it. Proper centering ensures balance and stability when shaping.

Step 2|Open the Clay

Once centered, gently press into the middle of the clay to open it, forming the base of your vessel. Adjust the depth and width of the opening as needed.

Step 3|Pull Up the Walls

Use both hands to slowly pull the clay upward, raising the walls and keeping the wall thickness even. This step determines the height and structure of your piece.

Step 4|Shape the Clay Form

Refine the shape of your piece as you wish. Adjust curves and proportions to create a cup, bowl, plate, small vase, or other item.

Step 5|Cut and Finish

Clean the base and refine the details using specialized tools, then carefully cut the finished piece from the wheel to complete the hand-throwing process.

Step 6|Dry and Fire in the Kiln

After the session, the studio will air dry and kiln-fire your ceramic work. The firing process takes approximately 30 days, after which you may pick up your work or have it shipped to you.
